Part of the Story | Saga of Svalbard |
. | |
They call it the Cold Edge; Svalbard, Spitzbergen or eastern Greenland
not far from Scoresbury Sound in the Polar Gulf. It belongs to Norway and is halfway
between the North Pole and Norway. Svalbard lies between latitude 74° and 81° North and
longitude 10° and 35° East. It was rediscovered by Willem Barents, a Dutch explorer, in
1596. The population is over 3000. Coal mining is the prime industry and Russia has mining rights and many settlers in Svalbard. The main town is Longyearbyen on the island of Ilsfjord. It was founded in 1906 by John Longyear, an American miner. And the real Saga of Svalbard is told in the paintings of Kåre Tveter, a Norwegian painter, on the labels of the Cognac LARSEN which is strictly controlled and in limited production. These Cognac LARSEN collector bottles can, however, only be purchased in Svalbard! |
